Vegetarians - Do they have a point?

- The accepted view of vegetarians
I eat meat.
I don’t apologise for eating meat - but I do feel the need to ensure that what I consume is as good for me and my family as possible, but also the welfare of the animal is considered.
An accepted view of vegetarians is that they are hippies, or worse still they are pale pasty individuals who are really difficult to cater for if they ever come to your house (the last bit can prove to be absolutely true for many meat eaters!)
The thing is, they might just have a point. Wait, wait - I am not saying that we should give up meat - heaven forfend! It’s just that most vegetarians motives for giving up meat are the same things that drive me toward ethically produced and (usually) organic meat.
- Vegetarians don’t like the abuse of animals to produce food. Well - I’m onside with that one.
- Vegetarians think that animals have rights - well, not really going to buy into that one (or start an argument about whether or not people actually have the rights that they think they do), but I do think that we should consider carefully the way that we care for animals that are destined to reach our plate.
- Vegetarians are often quite stringent (some would say stroppy) about telling people that they should be more caring towards animals - well I can completely understand that one. Most people I know get really bored listening to me espousing the virtues of organic meat!
So, those pasty faced hippies might just have a point. Bet they all want a bacon sandwich though!
