CELEBRITY chef Ainsley Harriott has ordered air-dried ham from Montgomeryshire-based Welsh Farm Organics after tasting it at last month’s BBC Good Food Show. And after sharing the stage with Jimmy Doherty (Jimmy’s Farm), owners Jonathan and Sally Rees revealed restaurateur John Torode may source their beef for Smiths of Smithfield, London.

CEREDIGION’S Llanllyr Water Company was named Drink Exporter of the Year at the Food from Britain Export Awards 2007. The bottled water producer, from Talsarn, then made it a double by collecting the Assembly Government-backed Welsh Exporter of the Year award.

Breed sale

SOME 96 animals have been entered for the Welsh Black Cattle Society sale at Dolgellau on January 15. Of the five females (all in-calf), 50 maiden heifers and 41 breeding bulls, 91% are free of Johne’s disease. Judging the females will be Ioan Roberts, Tryfil Isaf, Llannerchymedd, Anglesey. Fellow Anglesey breeder Brian Thomas, Plas Coedana, Llannerchymedd, will be assessing the bulls.

Star admirers

FILM stars Rhys Ifans and Sienna Miller were among the admirers as members of the Flintshire and Denbigh Hunt took part in Ruthin’s Mari Lwyd Parade just before Christmas. The huntsmen were followed by Erddig’s horse carriage driven by Steve Griffiths, of Wrexham.

Egg campaign

A NEW lion egg marketing campaign by the British Egg Information Service aims to show eggs can help with weight loss. It cites research that obese women lose more weight when eating two eggs for breakfast than without.

Research centre

LIVERPOOL University has opened what is claimed to be the world’s first multi-disciplinary animal disease research centre at its veterinary field station, Leahurst, Wirral. The National Centre for Zoonosis Research will investigates diseases such as rabies and bird flu.
